ABOUT THE PROJECT

Our client is a high-tech company that manufactures equipment for laser tag arenas.

As part of the development of the new direction “Military”, the client wanted to develop software for a new type of equipment used at training bases of military and police units.

The developed set of equipment should be installed on weapon mock-ups, flak jackets, military equipment and allow real-time monitoring of the movement of soldiers and equipment, as well as all the actions they perform – shots, injuries, recharging and so on.

Business needs

  • GOALS
The application should display the displacement vector and location of each fighter. All data is stored in the archive, so after the end of the training battle, the commander can view the records of movements on the map and conduct analytical work.
  • SOLUTIONS
To overcome the difficulty with the lack of a ready prototype equipment at the first stage of the project implementation, a flexible architecture of the application interaction protocols with the developed equipment was developed.
  • RESULTS
The main functionality of the application implements GPS tracking of combat units on pre-established realistic ranges. Movement of fighters is illustrated on the Android tablet in real time due to the special GPS modules installed in each set of equipment.

Technical Challenge

Ensuring real-time GPS tracking for military units under strict constraints: high event throughput, guaranteed data security, and uninterrupted performance during field training — all within a fixed and extremely limited delivery window.
Serhii

CTO Lineup

“Real-time synchronization of hundreds of GPS devices was the biggest technical challenge. The system had to process up to 10,000 events per second, maintain flawless accuracy, and stay stable under military-grade security requirements. The complexity increased due to the need to deliver the prototype in less than two months — with no room for errors.”

Key Challenges

Key Issues

  • Extreme Time Constraints
The prototype had to be designed, built, tested, and delivered in under two months — with a fixed demonstration date to NATO and the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
  • Strict Security & Confidentiality
All data — including movement vectors, hit statistics, and training analytics — had to meet military-grade security requirements and remain fully protected at every stage.
  • Embedded Hardware Integration
Custom GPS modules installed on weapon mock-ups and military gear required reliable communication protocols and fault-tolerant synchronization with the mobile and backend systems.

solution overview

To address these challenges, we delivered a robust end-to-end solution across hardware, software, and real-time data processing:

01

Modernization

Built a high-load backend able to process up to 10,000 GPS events/sec, ensuring stable real-time synchronization across all devices.

02

EMBEDDED SYSTEM INTEGRATION

Developed custom protocols and full compatibility with GPS modules installed on weapon mock-ups, vests, and training equipment.

03

REAL-TIME TRACKING & ANALYTICS

Implemented real-time movement tracking, event logging, and post-training analytics for accurate assessment of unit performance.

04

USER-CENTRIC MOBILE DESIGN

Created an Android tablet app for commanders with intuitive visualization of troop movement, status, and after-action review tools.

PROJECT STORY

When the client approached us, they needed a system capable of tracking dozens of fighters in real time during military training scenarios.

The main challenge was to deliver a fully working prototype in less than two months for a fixed demonstration to NATO and the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Real-time GPS telemetry produced extreme data loads, while the hardware used in training required custom protocols and deep integration with embedded systems. The team worked directly at the client’s facility to ensure compatibility with weapon mock-ups and vests.

The breakthrough came after optimizing the processing pipeline and stabilizing communication between all devices.

Team journey

Scaling the team to meet the intensity of field-ready development.

We expanded the delivery team as the project grew in complexity — from a small engineering crew to a cross-functional group including backend engineers, mobile developers, embedded specialists, and QA.

This allowed us to meet the strict deadlines, test the system under real training conditions, and prepare it for export abroad.

Technology That Scales

A high-load architecture built for field reliability — capable of processing thousands of real-time events, supporting complex training scenarios, and operating smoothly under military-grade security requirements.
